Independent musicians...Know your business!

The music business is like any other business whether you are selling t-shirts, pens, cars or whatever, you still have to invest in manufacturing, marketing and promotion. The illusion that the music business is different is falacy. Those who choose to direct all their efforts on getting the elusive record deal without adequate knowledge and preparation will find out the hard way that getting one is nearly impossible without the right business sense. The trick is to become serious about your art and your business, Without adequate business knowledge, funding and determination to succeed, your venture will be doomed to fail like any other unplanned, unsuccessful business. If you want to make money you have to sell good music not just music you hope will get signed. The point is KNOW YOUR BUSINESS!!

I'd like to see music as a career again instead of failure or rich asshole, these major labels have calibrated our expectations around their expectations of failure or success. Artists today need to be making music on their terms, thats success because that gives you options!. If you do extricate yourself from the traditional music industry, then you no longer have to buy into the idea that success is playing bad music and failure is playing good music, artists can reverse that scenario. My definition of success is being able to support yourself and your family the way you want and create music on your terms. To achieve success, just selling your music online is not enough, You need to set up multiple revenue streams, At the end of the day you have to be entrepreneurial with your music, when you do it, do it like any Entrepreneur or hustler would. Find ways to raise capital to finance your career, don't wait around for someone to write you a big fat cheque!

  2. as a musician i feel there are not enough opportunities out there for us to expand and grow. all the money i make off music i put back into music. I just need a little more to offset the costs. I agree with what you are saying though.
